Mat first found CrossFit in 2012 while looking for a new style of strength training. He had spent many years prior focusing on long distance running and lifting weights in a traditional gym setting with a personal trainer guiding him. After being exposed to CrossFit through his wife, who had discovered it a year earlier, he realized this was the workout program for him. The combination of strength training and conditioning, combined with gymnastics was way more fun than anything he had experienced before.
Fast forward a couple of years and Mat began coaching internships at two different local CrossFit boxes, Hardware CrossFit and CrossFit Chicago, where he was mentored by some of the most experienced trainers in the Chicago area. He eventually took a full-time position as a lead coach and personal trainer at a CrossFit box and spent the next few years working with athletes from many different backgrounds. In 2018 he brought his skills and knowledge back to Hardware CrossFit to work alongside some of the finest coaches in the city.
