Tell us a little bit about yourself. What do you do outside the gym?
I teach 7th and 8th grade social studies at a CPS school in West
Ridge, where I’ve been teaching for 18 years. I live with my husband,
Will, and our two cats, Flash and Limerick. I also direct middle
school theatre and some of my favorite shows I’ve directed include
Fiddler on the Roof, Newsies, Music Man, and Lion King. I love to
travel, read nonfiction, and study history.
What initially got you into training, and what keeps you coming back?
In my 30s, I was an avid runner and traveled across the U.S. to run
half marathons with my friend Miranda, who lives in Boise. When she
got into lifting and started encouraging me to give it a try, I
decided to look for a gym. That’s how I discovered Hardware. Although
I loved running, I often struggled with injuries and thought that
lifting could help improve my performance. At the time, I was also
playing hockey, so I believed strength training would benefit me there
too. I keep returning to Hardware because everyone is so kind and
supportive. The sense of community is what truly draws me back, along
with the occasional post-workout beers at Spiteful with Hardware
friends—always a fun way to relax after a Friday evening workout (my
favorite.)
What are your fitness goals? How close are you to reaching them?
My goal is to stay healthy and active. I’d also be thrilled to climb
to the top of the rope, which I’m close to achieving, but I didn’t
want to risk it right before my wedding on October 4. I have a bad
ankle, so I’m cautious when I need to be. I’m eager to push myself to
achieve new PRs in the deadlift, back squat, and overhead squat.
However, cardio is my favorite, and I always want to improve my
endurance and speed. Above all, I want to keep running as I age.
What’s an accomplishment or goal you’ve reached at Hardware that
makes you the most proud?
I’ve come to enjoy snatches. There were a couple of years when that
seemed impossible. I used to hate riding a bike, but I can tolerate it
now. Also, during one Open I did more wall walks then I ever thought
possible. That was a fun achievement. Most of all I’m proud of
continuing to show up. I’ve been battling plantar fasciitis for years
and still have issues with my foot and ankle, but I keep coming back
and trying to challenge myself. I’m proud of that.
Favorite WOD/movement?
I love handstands. They make me happy and remind me of when I was a
kid. I love overhead squats too, which apparently are not well loved
by most people, but I absolutely love them. I also love long cardio of
almost any kind.
Least favorite WOD/movement?
Push ups. I hate push ups!
Any advice for someone interested in trying out Hardware?
Hardware is an amazing group of people. It’s a place for everyone, no
matter your goals. Just give it a try. You won’t regret it. And give
yourself time, listen to your body, and don’t forget working out
should bring you joy. Hardware has definitely brought me a lot of joy
and I’m very grateful for that.
