Tell us a little bit about yourself. What do you do outside the gym?
Outside the gym, when I’m not cooped up behind a work screen, you’ll likely spot me walking my 13-year-old dog— taking him on long walks around the neighborhood, exploring new places, going to his favorite spots like the beach or being dragged to all the places where he knows he will get a cookie. I also enjoy cooking (very recently mustered up the courage to start baking bread— a challenge I had put off for years) and catching drinks and/or a good meal with friends and family.
What initially got you into training, and what keeps you coming back?
This may come as a surprise to some (or most), but I used to be pretty athletic. When I moved to the States though, I wasn’t able to pursue the sports I used to love, and for a while, I struggled to motivate myself to go to a gym. Traditional weightlifting on machines just felt too monotonous. After a few years of being inactive, I knew I had to do something. I heard about CrossFit and Hardware and decided to give it a shot.
Almost immediately, I started to feel stronger and just overall better. What I really appreciated was learning Olympic weightlifting. It made something that once felt inaccessible suddenly achievable. I love how technical and synchronized the movements are and how they tapped into the focus and control I used to feel when training in other sports. What keeps me coming back is the combination of physical progress and mental reset that training provides along with the supportive community at Hardware that makes working out something to look forward to.
What are your fitness goals? How close are you to reaching them?
My main goals have been to build strength, stay healthy and feel confident in my movement. Honestly, it’s about trying to stay consistent when I can which can be a struggle when I’m managing anxiety and often running on little sleep most days. Progress is not always linear, but each cycle brings small improvements like lifting a little heavier, moving with better form, or just feeling more energized overall. For me, it’s all about keeping at it, giving myself grace when I’m not as consistent as I’d like to be and not giving up.
What’s an accomplishment or goal you’ve reached at Hardware that makes you the most proud?
My biggest accomplishment has been sticking with it, even when my motivation or energy is low. I try to show up, give what I can and trust that it adds up over time. Seeing measurable progress, like increasing my lifts and improving my form and not feeling completely gassed after a few burpees or wall balls has been motivating.
Favorite WOD/movement?
Anything with a barbell (or kettlebell for that matter). Power cleans and deadlifts make me feel strong, and I appreciate workouts that combine those with conditioning.
Least favorite WOD/movement?
Running. And movements that don’t seem very ‘functional’ like handstand pushups.
